The law reveals sin; it provokes sin; it brings out that which is within, for sin is not reckoned where there is no law. The law provides no remedy for the sinner. The little boy with the dirty face looks into the mirror and all the mirror does is reveal to the little boy his dirty face. It offers no help and offers no cleansing power. It gives him no object. All it does is leave him subjectively TRYING to manage his weakness.
The law condemns us hopelessly, because no one can fulfill all the requirements of the law. But there is One, only One who did—Christ the Lamb, the greatest demonstration of God’s UNCONDITIONAL LOVE, MERCY, AND GRACE that little boy could find, no matter how hard he TRIED, any way of escape. He couldn’t get that picture of his dirty face, that the mirror revealed to him, out of his mind.
Then one day he met Jesus as his SAVIOR. Jesus not only did away with the mirror, but gave him a brand new face. Now he sees himself with the new face that Jesus gave him. When he fails, and oh how he hates to fail, he sees his failure in the light of the glory that shines out from Jesus’ face into his. He confesses his sin that he hates and continues to go on in the light of who he is in Jesus’ face. He doesn’t have to try to escape his sin. He no longer hides in his sin, he runs to Jesus and hides himself in the light of the love of Jesus FOR HIM.
